DAAST | furniture, lighting, architectural accessories

ANDREW SOUTHWOOD-JONES and ALEXANDER KASHIN met whilst studying architecture, establishing digital fabrication studio KINK whilst students, collaborating with leading Australian architects, product designers and creative agencies.

KINK-studio explore technologies that enable manufacturing efficiencies, and in s short time they achieved phenomenal success making architectural models, prototyping products for industrial designers, and creating large-scale installations – all driven by a digital design.

By definition – digital fabrication is the process of designing on computer and the digital files then driving automated machinery (laser cutting, 3D printers, CNC routers) to create products, prototypes, models and building components.

Investing in their own tooling and machinery, and armed with a penchant for exploring innovative fabrication processes, KINK swiftly set themselves apart from similar businesses, the new-found knowledge inevitably leading Andrew and Alex to explore furniture, lighting and object design.

The material and exploration with process in design lead the duo to develop a thirst for product design, last year being finalists at the LAUNCH PAD Prototype exhibition; winning the People’s Choice Award at WORKSHOPPED 2013; and notably winning the prestigious QANTAS SOYA 365 Award for Craft and Object Design –  judged by Marc Newson.

Early this year, Andrew and Alex were finalists in the Space MOOOI Design Residency, presenting to Moooi co-founder and CEO, Casper Vissers.

With a raft of prestigious accolades awarded within just 12 months of exploring furniture, lighting and architectural accessory design, Andrew and Alex have launched their own design brand DAAST.

‘Andrew and Alexander have a lot of energy and there is strong potential in their work. I look forward to working with them and offering guidance for their new studio’

‘Winning SOYA gives us the opportunity to showcase our work and gain valuable feedback from one of the most iconic people in the design industry’
